New lockdown for northern England as coronavirus cases surge

BBC, 31 Jul 2020
Tough new restrictions for millions of people living in parts of northern England have been announced following a rise in cases of coronavirus.

People living in Greater Manchester and parts of East Lancashire and West Yorkshire are banned from going to other people's homes and cannot meet inside or in private gardens.

The Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the measures were required because people were not keeping to rules on social distancing and said immediate action was needed to keep people safe.

The changes affect millions of households across huge areas of northern England.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by health correspondent Sophie Hutchinson, Judith Moritz in Manchester and political correspondent Chris Mason.
