Nigerian president calls for release of Mali’s Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta
CA, 21 Aug 2020
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday called for Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, Mali’s embattled president, to be immediately released following a military coup in the West African country.
Buhari made the comments during a virtual meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
“Nigeria believes that President Keïta and all other detainees should be released unconditionally and with immediate effect,” Buhari said.
Keïta announced his resignation in a televised address hours after he was detained by the military junta. He is reportedly being held at a military camp near Bamako.
Buhari said political stability in Mali was “crucial” to the region and urged the international community to condemn the military’s actions in the country.
ECOWAS leaders have halted trade relations with Mali in the wake of the military coup.
