Hundreds of Nissan workers dressed up as characters from the popular series "La Casa de Papel (Money Heist)" staged a protest on Wednesday in front of the Spanish parliament to protest against the closure of plants of the Japanese firm in Spain.

Singing the anti-fascist anthem of 'Bella Ciao', protesters demanded the government of PM Pedro Sanchez take action to change the law in order to protect jobs.

The Japanese carmaker announced in May they would shut a plant in Barcelona and several nearby facilities from December as part of a global restructuring plan to slash costs.

The decision is a blow for Spain at a time when unemployment is spiking and a steep recession is looming because of the coronavirus crisis.
