North Korea sends thousands of citizens to help typhoon recovery effort

Telegraph, 09 Sep 2020
North Korea has mobilised thousands of its people to help in recovery efforts following several typhoons.

State television showed thousands of members of Pyongyang’s Workers’ Party lined up in rows before they were sent on trains to rural areas worst hit by the storms.

State broadcaster KRT said 12,000 people were present at the ceremony which took place at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun.

Pyongyang citizens were dressed in olive-green tunics and trousers, a uniform which they all keep to use when taking part in mobilisations.

North Korea has been hit by three typhoons in just over a month, leaving buildings damaged and roads flooded.

After visiting regions hit by the typhoon, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un urged people to volunteer and help in recovery efforts

Following the ceremony the crowd marched through Pyongyang, as other citizens spared from duty waved and cheered them on.
