Northern Ireland leader Arlene Foster announces resignation

Al Jazeera, 30 Apr 2021
Northern Ireland's First Minister Arlene Foster has announced she is resigning after calls within her party, the Democratic Unionist Party, for a leadership contest.
Critics blame Foster for the imposition of the Irish Sea border, a de facto customs border between Britain and Northern Ireland, which was agreed as part of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union.
And in recent months, Northern Ireland has been hit by rioting, partly attributed to unionist concerns about the province's position in the UK being weakened.
Many DUP members have been angry that Foster has not denounced the Northern Ireland protocol - which imposes checks on goods coming from Britain - more forcefully.
The fallout from Brexit is likely to be one of the toughest challenges for her successor, too.
Al Jazeera’s Nadim Baba reports.
