Ontario gives details on ending applied and academic streaming, suspensions for some students
CA, 10 Jul 2020
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Education Minister Stephen Lecce, Health Minister and Deputy Premier Christine Elliott and Jamil Jivani, Ontario's advocate for community opportunities, held a COVID-19 briefing on Thursday.
A majority of the briefing focused on Ontario's Education Equity Strategy, which would include the elimination of suspensions for students from kindergarten to Grade 3 for non-serious offences, and that the previously announced plan to end the streaming process in Grade 9 would begin in fall 2021 with math courses. Ford and Lecce added that any teacher or educator who engaged in behaviour or makes hateful slurs seen as Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, homophobic, or any other kind of hate would "be done," and would introduce sanctions on teachers to eliminate this behaviour.
Asked repeatedly whether parents in the province should ask their employers for flexibility in the fall dependent on whether students will be back in the classroom daily, Lecce said the aim is to have students in in-class learning daily, but health officials have not given the green light. He did not, however, give a specific answer and would not say if they could give a specific plan to parents to prepare for in September, saying he has to have a plan for “each and every scenario.”
Ontario reported 170 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, with three new deaths. Of the new cases, Elliott said 86 are from Windsor-Essex where targeted testing of temporary workers at Essex-area farms continues.
