Opposition leader Andrew Scheer criticizes Liberal government's policy towards China

CA, 13 Jun 2020
Leader of the Official Opposition Andrew Scheer spoke on Friday from Parliament Hill in Ottawa where he criticized the Liberal government's policy towards China.

Scheer called for an emergency meeting for the Canada-China relationship parliament committee following the recent ethics commissioner report which shows Liberal Minister of Foreign Affairs François-Philippe Champagne is indebted to a Chinese bank with an outstanding balance of $1.2 million.

Scheer recalled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's comments from 2013 when he said he "admires China's basic dictatorship" and added that "he is not surprised" by Trudeau's choice of whom to appoint as a Foreign Affairs Minister, given his 2013 comments.

Scheer also called for a change in the policy towards China following the recent National Security Law by the Chinese government which "violates the rights and freedoms of the people of Hong Kong," he said.

He also referred to comments made by Minister Champagne three years ago when he said "China stands out as a beacon of stability, predictability, a rule-based system, a very inclusive society."

Scheer said the Minister must remember the one million Uighur Muslims detained in China and the Canadian citizens detained in China as well when calling the country "a rule-based and an inclusive society."
