Pacific "football fish" washes up on California beach

CA, 13 May 2021
A predator from the darkest parts of the ocean has been found dead on the sunny shores of California.

The all-black angler fish — a deep-sea predator with a bioluminescent lure that hangs in front of its mouth to hypnotize prey in the blackness of the ocean — is known as a Pacific football fish.

A person on the beach stumbled upon the fish on Friday morning along the shore, according to Crystal Cove State Park, saying it was "very rare" to see an angler fish intact and it's unknown how or why the fish ended up on shore.
Ross Hull explains.
