Parkland shooting survivor Aalayah Eastmond calls for defunding of police in emotional speech

CA, 28 Aug 2020
Parkland school shooting survivor Aalayah Eastmond delivered an emotional speech at Friday's March on Washington, calling for defunding of police departments in the U.S. and an end to gun violence.

"There is a need for a national conversation about defunding police departments and refunding our communities instead," she said.

Eastmond recounted her experience when 17-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fl., but said she wasn't the first in her family "to experience gun violence."

She said her uncle was gunned down in Brooklyn, NY, at the age of 18 "just months after being beaten by NYPD."
