Pelosi credits fight against AIDS for historic victories like marriage equality

CA, 06 Jun 2021
Marking the 40th anniversary of the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi credited the activism that sprung up in the wake of the first cases reported in the U.S., and for subsequent victories in the effort to end discrimination against the LGTBQ community.

“We wouldn’t have had marriage equality at this point without the fight on HIV and AIDS. We would not have had overturned the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" without the fight with HIV and AIDS.” she said.

Pelosi joined a sombre ceremony in San Francisco, Calif., where she laid a wreath honouring the 700,000 Americans who lost their lives to AIDS.
