Thousands of people across the U.S. gathered Saturday to speak out against a recent rise in violence targeting Asian Americans.

Wena Teng, who joined demonstrators in New York City, said her mother and aunt work as nail technicians in local salons and explained how her family deals with constant fears of an attack.

"Like many Asians, I grew up translating documents and words for my parents," she said. "But tell me, how do I translate what it means to be Asian in America?"

In Los Angeles, hundreds of people marched through the streets in the Koreatown neighbourhood during a rally organized in part by the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles.
