Peruvian president Pedro Castillo sworn in, promises to "govern with the people"

CA, 29 Jul 2021
Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, whose full name is Jose Pedro Castillo Terrones, was sworn in on Wednesday in Lima as the country continues to face persistent social divisions dating back to colonial days.

He was elected last month as a representative of a Marxist party, shaking the political elite and causing concern for companies over his plans to hike taxes on mining to fund health and education reforms in the world's second-largest copper producer.

During an address following his swearing-in, Castillo promised to "govern with the people and for the people," while also promising the people of Peru of a country without corruption.
