Pittsburgh bridge collapses ahead of Biden visit to highlight infrastructure needs

CA, 29 Jan 2022
A two-lane bridge in Pittsburgh collapsed on Friday hours ahead of a planned visit by U.S. President Joe Biden to the city in Pennsylvania, a dramatic example of the urgency behind his drive to rebuild the country's ageing infrastructure.

Ten people sustained minor injuries, when the snow-covered span collapsed into a wooded gully. The collapse also caused a natural gas leak, which prompted the temporary evacuation of several families.

The incident is a high-profile example of the need to rebuild the country's old bridges, highways and other infrastructure with funding from a $1 trillion spending bill that was a signature achievement of Biden's first year in office.
