Police and protesters clash in battered Beirut

RT, 07 Aug 2020
Clashes amid the ruins of blast devastated #Beirut as security forces use tear gas to quell anti-government protests.

Demonstrators gathered in the streets of #Lebanon’s capital to express their contempt for the country’s leaders. Tuesday’s blast, which destroyed entire districts of the city, seems to have re-energized anti-government tensions. Protesters claim the 2,750 tonnes of unsafely stored ammonium nitrate which reportedly caused the explosion, is a tragic example of the governments’ negligence. Locals are calling for donations to go to volunteer organizations, as they fear international aid given to the government will be embezzled. So far only two officials have resigned since the catastrophe: MP Marwan Hamadeh and Lebanon’s ambassador to Jordan, Tracy Chamoun. They said the tragedy shows the need for a change in leadership.
