Police in France protest over chokehold ban, stigma

CA, 13 Jun 2020
Police in France marched along the Champs Élysées in Paris on Friday, June 12 in response to the French government banning a chokehold restraint technique used to detain suspects, as well as accusing President Emmanuel Macron and his administration of scapegoating law enforcement agencies amid ongoing protests over race discrimination.

The police unions said the government was showing disrespect after Interior Minister Christophe Castaner promised "zero tolerance" for racism within law enforcement agencies and banned the chokehold technique.

Fabien Vanhemelryck of the National Police Alliance union said that their colleagues were "hurt" and "disgusted," and said they felt stigmatized, adding that "police are not racist. We're fed up with hearing that."

Protests against anti-Black racism and police brutality have taken place globally for nearly three weeks after the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. on Memorial Day. Floyd died of asphyxiation as a result of a white police officer kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes while other officers pinned him to the ground.
