Portland protests: Police union building set on fire, riot declared

CA, 19 Jul 2020
Protesters in Portland, Ore., were met with a show of force from officers on Saturday as police declared a riot in the area after a police union building was set on fire.

It is the 51st consecutive night of demonstrations in the city, which were initially sparked by the killing of Black man George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in May.

Federal officers have been deployed to Portland under the Trump administration’s new executive order protecting U.S. monuments and buildings.

President Donald Trump has decried the demonstrations, and Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf blasted the protesters as “lawless anarchists” in a visit to the city on Thursday.

“We are trying to help Portland, not hurt it,” Trump tweeted Sunday. “Their leadership has, for months, lost control of the anarchists and agitators. They are missing in action. We must protect Federal property, AND OUR PEOPLE. These were not merely protesters, these are the real deal!”
