President Trump nominates judge Amy Coney Barrett for Supreme Court seat left vacant by RBG | FULL

CA, 27 Sep 2020
U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday announced his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, naming 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge Amy Coney Barrett as his pick to fill the vacancy left by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg after she died last Friday. Trump paid tribute to a “true American legend” and said her legacy would inspire generations to come.

Trump said that as a Supreme Court justice, nominee Coney Barrett would decide cases based on the text of the Constitution. He also hopes the Senate would provide a fair and timely hearing, saying he expects a prompt confirmation and said he was “sure it would be extremely non-controversial.”

Coney Barrett said she was “deeply honoured” Saturday for being picked for the nation’s highest court and said if she was confirmed, she would be “mindful” of who came before her in Ginsburg. She also said that judges are not policy-makers and must “apply the law as written.”

Trump has faced criticisim by the Democrats, including former vice-president Joe Biden, for insisting on filling the Supreme Court seat weeks before the election on Nov. 3.
