President Trump recognizes California National Guard for wildfire rescues
CA, 15 Sep 2020
U.S. President Donald Trump participated in a ceremony honouring the California National Guard on Monday, presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross award to seven soldiers "for their remarkable courage to rescue their fellow citizens."
Trump said the soldiers "embarked on a harrowing mission" on Sept. 5, flying into "blazing flames" to rescue families who were trapped by the Creek Fire at the Mammoth Pool camp ground, and returning three times to save over 200 people.
In California, tens of thousands of firefighters were battling 28 major wildfires as of Saturday afternoon and improving weather conditions have helped them gain a measure of containment over most of the blazes, Cal Fire said.
Trump has previously suggested the reason behind the wildfires there and elsewhere on the U.S. West Coast was due to poor forest management.
