Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: "No way that we can move forward unless we acknowledge the past"

CA, 07 Jul 2020
Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle spoke about race and equal rights to young leaders on July 1 on a video call with the Queen's Commonwealth Trust (QCT).

"Certainly when you look across the Commonwealth, there is no way that we can move forward unless we acknowledge the past," Harry told young QCT leaders on the call from the pair's Los Angeles home.

The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary political association mostly composed of territories of the former British Empire, headed by Harry's grandmother, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II. The QCT, where Harry and Meghan serve as president and vice-president, describes itself as "growing network of young changemakers across the Commonwealth".

Meghan also addressed the death of George Floyd and the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement.

"I think that's what was very much manifested in what you are feeling from people's outpouring surrounding the murder of George Floyd," she said.

Although Prince Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals earlier this year, they have kept their roles with QCT, who have been hosting weekly calls on the "various forms of injustice on the experiences of young people today" in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.
