Prince Philip's life may have been dedicated to Queen and country, but it was his love for sport that defined him beyond his royal duties.
His sporting prowess started from a young age at Gordonstoun school in Scotland, where he was the captain of both cricket and hockey teams.
When Philip returned from his duties in the Royal Navy after the Second World War, he developed his love for polo. But with the passing of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth's coronation, the Duke had to focus on his royal duties.
At the age of 50, he took up carriage driving and later became the president of the International Equestrian Federation. He was also well known for his love of sailing, and was a keen yachtsman.
