Protester compares Confederate monument in Virginia to a "statue of Hitler in a Jewish community"

CA, 12 Jun 2020
A protester in Portsmouth, Virginia, engaged in a passionate debate with those opposed to the defacing of a Confederate monument, delivered an powerful explanation for Black protesters’ opposition to the statues, comparing it to having a “statue of Hitler in a Jewish community.”

Protesters had beheaded four statues that were part of the monument before toppling one completely during a rally on Wednesday night.

The woman said the monument is in a “predominantly Black” community and asked, “Why do we have to come down here and see this?”

She said they had asked the city to remove the monument and were told they didn’t know who it belonged to despite paperwork that she claims shows it is the property of the city.
