A small but violent protest took place in central Beirut on August 6, 2020, following two days after deadly explosions that flattened the Lebanese capital’s port. Riot police responded with tear gas to disperse angry protesters. Earlier the same day, visiting French President Emmanuel Macron visited the blast site and was met by furious crowds who urged the French leader to push for political change in Lebanon. Macron promised that French aid will go to Lebanon and not to corrupt hands, with no blank cheques given to leaders unless they enact reforms and take steps to end corruption.
