CA, 18 Jun 2020
Protesters burned portraits and an effigy of Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday as pressure mounted in India to retaliate after the death of 20 soldiers in a deadly clash with Chinese troops in a disputed border region the western Himalayas on Monday.
In Kolkata, protesters burned an effigy of Xi. In Ahmedabad, members of the National Students' Union called for a boycott of China before burning portraits of the Chinese president. In Kanpur, residents held a mock funeral for Xi, lighting a casket draped in a paper Chinese flag on fire before dumping it into a river.
China has not given details of deaths or injuries among its troops, but has agreed to de-escalate the situation at their border as soon as possible, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
