Rayshard Brooks death: Family to speak after charges laid against officers | LIVE
CA, 18 Jun 2020
The family of Rayshard Brooks and their attorney are expected to speak on Wednesday after charges were laid against the two police officers involved in his fatal shooting last week.
Garrett Rolfe, the former officer who shot Brooks, faces 11 charges including felony murder and aggravated assault. One of the assault charges is for kicking Brooks after he had been shot. If convicted, Rolfe could face life in prison or the death penalty.
Officer Devin Brosnan, who was also on scene, is facing three charges including aggravated assault and violation of oath. They are related to Brosnan standing on Brooks’ shoulders after he was shot and not rendering medical attention.
Brooks died after a police confrontation in an Atlanta Wendy's parking lot escalated to gunfire last week. An autopsy conducted shows Brooks was shot twice in the back. The medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide.
The death of Brooks — another in a long line of Black Americans killed by police — further heightened racial concerns in the United States at a time of national soul-searching over racism and police brutality.
