Roe v. Wade overturned: Trudeau slams "devastating" decision, calls it an "attack" on women's rights

CA, 25 Jun 2022
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday that the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion ruling was an "attack" on women's freedom and "on everyone's freedoms and rights."

He said the federal government would continue to defend a woman's right to choose and work to expand access to the full range of reproductive services across Canada.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said the ruling was a "dark day" and a setback for women's "hard-fought gains" over the past 50 years. She said the decision also has a "domino effect" on other human rights.

The decision by the highest court in the U.S. upheld a Mississippi law that would ban most abortions after the 15th week, abolishing the legal precedent that Roe v. Wade established in 1973 and a 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision that reaffirmed it.

Following the ruling, the question of whether abortions are legal will now be left up to individual states, which will lead to widespread differences in access across the nation. Currently, some states have laws making abortion illegal, while others have "trigger laws" that will now take effect with Roe v. Wade having been overturned.
