Roe v. Wade overturned: US politicians, advocates react to historic decision

CA, 25 Jun 2022
Moments after the U.S. Supreme Court released a decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and ban abortion rights, reaction poured in from supporters and opponents of the decision.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi started her weekly press conference by condemning the decision as a “slap in the face” for women, and said women’s reproductive rights will be “on the ballot” in the November midterm elections.

Governors of western states including California, Oregon, and Washington released a pre-taped statement in response to the Court’s decision.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said that “reproductive rights are under attack” while Washington Governor Jay Inslee said “the West Coast of the United States is going to stand strong.”

New York City mayor Eric Adams vowed to make the city a “safe haven” for women seeking abortion and said the decision “constrains women’s freedoms and challenges the autonomy.”

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren posted a video condemning the Supreme Court decision, saying “the Supreme Court is pushing goals that contradict the constitution and the basic rights of the American people.”

On the other hand, a spokesperson for the Texas Alliance for Life, a nonprofit “committed to protecting the fundamental right to life of all innocent human beings” and opposed to abortion (except to preserve the mother’s life), said the organization was “very thrilled” with the decision.

The president of the California-based pro-life organization 'The Right to Life League' said she was “personally thrilled” by the Court’s decision.
