Russians, foreign diplomats pay tribute to slain Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov

CA, 28 Feb 2021
Russians and several foreign diplomats, including U.S. Ambassador John Sullivan and U.K Ambassador Deborah Bronnert, laid flowers on Saturday at the site where Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov was assassinated in 2015 on a bridge near the Kremlin.

Nemtsov, who briefly served as deputy prime minister in the late 1990s before joining the opposition, had been working on a report examining Russia's role in the conflict in Ukraine at the time of his killing on Feb. 27, 2015.

After his murder, opposition activists began guarding a makeshift memorial on the bridge when municipal authorities turned down a request to put up a plaque there in his honor.

Saturday's commemoration came amid a clampdown on protests over the jailing of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. Allies of Navalny, who was jailed this month on parole violations he said were trumped up, called on his supporters to lay flowers on the Moscow bridge where Nemtsov was gunned down.
