17 sailors, 4 civilians injured in fire on Navy ship USS Bonhomme Richard
CA, 13 Jul 2020
Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck briefed the media on Sunday evening on the major fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard earlier in the day. The ship was docked at Naval Base San Diego for repairs when the fire broke out. 17 sailors and four civilians were being treated at local hospitals in San Diego for smoke inhalation. Officials say they are all in stable condition.
"There was a report of an internal explosion. What we cannot ascertain is exactly what that explosion was caused from. Initials reports is a sort of a backdraft of an over pressurization. When the compartment started heating up that caused the pressurization and what caused the explosion," Adm. Sobeck said.
It's unclear what sparked the blaze, but officials say the ship will absolutely sail again.
