PBS, 28 Jul 2020
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke on Monday at the late Rep. John Lewis’ memorial. Lewis, a civil rights icon and longtime representative from Georgia, is the first Black lawmaker to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led a delegation to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to greet Lewis’ casket, which was then escorted by motorcade to the Capitol, stopping at the new Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House. On Sunday, Lewis’ casket was carried across Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where Lewis and other civil rights marchers were beaten 55 years ago on “Bloody Sunday.”
