Singapore: Lab grown meat to go on sale for first time in landmark regulatory approval

Telegraph, 03 Dec 2020
Lab-grown meat could soon be on supermarket shelves in the UK after the ‘space race’ for the future of food was kick-started in Singapore.

US company Eat Just has won approval from Singapore’s food regulator to start selling its cultured ‘chicken bites’ there.

Advocates said the decision would pave the way for lab-grown meat to be sold around the world, including in Britain.

“A new space race for the future of food is underway,” said Bruce Friedrich, the executive director of the Good Food Institute, which lobbies for the uptake of cultured meat.

Sophie Armour, a spokesperson for GFI, said the approval from Singapore’s regulator was “a sign that this can be approved here.”

The lab-grown meat is made by developing cells sourced from a live animal in a bioreactor fed with nutrients. It holds the promise of a slaughter- and cruelty-free alternative that doesn’t compromise on taste and texture but mitigates the climate impacts of industrial agriculture, which include methane emissions and widespread deforestation.
