Singh reaffirms anyone who votes against motions in the House to address systemic racism is "racist"
CA, 18 Jun 2020
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Wednesday responded to an earlier incident where he was kicked out of the House of Commons for calling Bloc Québécois MP Alain Therrien "racist" after he disagreed with a motion to "call out systemic racism in the RCMP."
Singh pointed out the disproportionate police-related deaths of Indigenous and Black people in Canada, and said of the incident, "Why can't we do something to save people's lives?"
He reaffirmed that anyone who votes against a motion like this that "calls for basic fixes to the problem" is a "racist."
Singh had asked the House of Commons to recognize there is systemic racism in the RCMP and to call on the government to review the force’s budget, ensure the Mounties are truly accountable and do a full review of the RCMP’s use of force.
