Stacey Abrams: We need 'wholesale change' in justice system, 'not just moments of response'
PBS, 19 Jun 2020
Voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams on June 18 said that change is important in this moment, where calls for justice against systemic racism and police brutality, in light of killings such as that of Rayshard Brooks, a black man who was shot by police in a Wendy's parking lot in Atlanta last week, ring across the country. "We need to see the laws changed — not just moments of response, which are good and important," Abrams told PBS NewsHour anchor and managing editor, Judy Woodruff. "But we need to see that there is a wholesale change in the systems of justice that either allow the extrajudicial killings of citizens or permit justice to be delayed because we have laws on the books that protect murderers." In the case of Brooks, the officer involved in the shooting was charged, and Atlanta's mayor announced reforms aimed at police use of force.
