Taiwan began using a redesigned passport on January 11, 2021, that gives greater prominence to the island’s day-to-day name than its formal name “Republic of China”. Taipei says the move is a bid to avoid confusion between travellers from Taiwan and mainland China, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic.
