Riot police fired tear gas and charged at pockets of violent protesters in central Paris on Saturday as the latest round of demonstrations against police brutality and racism in the wake of the death of George Floyd took place in France and globally.

Some protesters hurled bottles and other objects at police lines after three hours of peaceful demonstrations gave way to clashes.

The day had begun with thousands denouncing police violence, with many chanting "no justice, no peace." Assa Traore, sister of 24-year-old Adama who died in police custody in 2016, told crowds the death of Floyd had a "strong echo" to that of her brother's.

Floyd died in police custody on Memorial Day in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Floyd died of asphyxiation as a result of a white police officer kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes while other officers pinned him to the ground. Floyd’s death has sparked weeks of global protests against anti-Black racism and police brutality.
