Six new cabinet officials were sworn in at Dusit Palace in Thailand on August 12, 2020, on the heels of recent protests calling for political reform in relation to the country’s monarchy. As recently as August 10, thousands of protesters gathered at a university on the outskirts of Bangkok, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. The military-aligned leader came to power in a 2014 coup and was declared the winner in a disputed election in 2019. Prayuth has expressed concern about the growing student protest movement, and said the government will set up a public forum to listen to their demands.
