Focus on the big picture

The age of wild weather

CGTN, 01 Sep 2022
An unprecedented volcanic eruption, unprecedented droughts and floods and unprecedented wildfires. The Hub with Wang Guan asks a panel of experts in water, environment and energy on why we are witnessing such massive disasters. The answer and solution, lead back to China-U.S. ties.

Bangkok-based environmental expert Winston Chow and Vice Chair of the Governing Council of Asia Pacific Water Forum in Washington, D.C., Wu Changhua, both agree that extreme weather events are triggered by the major disruptions caused by human-induced climate change. But no local crisis remains local. Tsinghua University professor Guan Dabo says with the supply chain network linking all regions today, the fires in China's Chongqing, for example, are no longer just a China issue but a global issue since it is an economic hub. Climate and peace are interlinked and calamities also trigger instability.

Philip Andrews-Speed, senior principal fellow at the Energy Studies Institute of the National University of Singapore, thinks the sanctions on Russian oil and gas will accelerate the search for new energy. However, the most critical thing is global collaboration. China and the U.S., as the largest emitters as well as climate mitigation leaders, have to put aside differences and seriously "rethink, reshape, restructure their bilateral relationship." One positive sign is that the academic and scientific communities in both countries are pushing ahead with their collaboration.
