‘The town has been destroyed’: Germany deals with flood aftermath
Al Jazeera, 18 Jul 2021
Emergency workers in western Germany are searching for hundreds of people believed to be missing after devastating floods.
More than 160 people are confirmed dead, and that figure may increase.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called the floods a catastrophe and will visit the region on Sunday.
During his visit to Erfstadt, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier assured survivors help but asked them to be patient.
The tragedy has raised widespread concerns that German authorities have not done enough for increasingly frequent bouts of extreme weather driven by climate change.
Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from the German town of Erftstadt.
