Thousands protest in Algeria to reject planned elections
CA, 27 Mar 2021
Thousands of Algerians took the streets on Friday to demand political changes and to reject planned legislative elections.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has set June 12 for early legislative elections, after announcing the dissolution of the lower house of parliament last month.
Protesters say they won't stop demonstrating until the ruling class are out of government. "We went out to say that people aren't going to vote, these elections are a masquerade,'' said one protester at the march, while another stated, “We are always here and we won't stop."
Mass street protests resumed one month ago after a halt caused by a COVID-19 lockdown imposed by the government in March 2020.
