Throne speech: NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh urges paid sick leave, no cuts to COVID-19 support

CA, 24 Sep 2020
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh responded to the Liberal government’s throne speech on Wednesday, telling Global's Mercedes Stephenson that his party would be willing to support Prime Minister Justin Trudeau if potential cuts to COVID-19 assistance to families who may be unable to return to work do not happen.

Singh said while he does not see issue with the proposed method of transferring people off the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) onto Employment Insurance (EI), he is concerned with the proposal to cut the benefit to $1,600 and said he wants no cuts to take place. He added that he also would like to see the government establish paid sick leave as well.

Singh said that his intention is not "looking for a way to tear down government," but he would like to see the Liberals consider changes to their current plans regarding the CERB, which would likely solidify the party's support and prevent a potential election.
