Tokyo 2020 Olympics chief resigns over sexist remarks as protesters demand Games be cancelled

CA, 12 Feb 2021
Tokyo 2020 Olympics chief Yoshiro Mori resigned on Friday over sexist remarks that sparked a global outcry, leaving the troubled Olympics board searching for a new president five months before the supposed start of the event.

Mori, the former Japanese prime minister, sparked criticism when he said during an Olympic committee meeting earlier this month that women talk too much, setting off calls for him to resign, though he refused to step down.

Mori said that though he may have said something unnecessary, he did not do it intentionally and felt his comments were misinterpreted by the media, adding he doesn't "have any intention to disrespect women."

Meanwhile, about 30 anti-Olympics protesters gathered outside the board meeting venue. The protesters chanted for Tokyo 2020 to break up and called on Tokyo 2020 to cancel the Games.
