Tokyo Olympics: Penny Oleksiak becomes Canada’s most decorated Summer Games athlete

CA, 28 Jul 2021
Canada’s Penny Oleksiak has won her second medal at the Tokyo Olympics, making it the sixth of her career, taking bronze in the women’s 200-metre freestyle swim Wednesday.

The medal makes Oleksiak the most decorated Canadian athlete to ever compete at the Summer Games and ties her with speed skater Cindy Klassen and cyclist and speed skater Clara Hughes.

Meanwhile, American defending champion Simone Biles will not be defending her title after withdrawing from Thursday’s all-around gymnastics final.

USA Gymnastics released a statement saying Biles’ withdrawal was made “after further medical evaluation” for the 24-year-old superstar gymnast to “focus on her mental health.”

It remains to be seen if Biles will rejoin the competition for next week’s individual event finals.
