Trudeau holds first full press conference after election win | LIVE
CA, 29 Sep 2021
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to hold his first full press conference following his party's election victory last week which returned them to a minority government, albeit with a few additional seats from what they had at dissolution.
Trudeau did speak briefly this past Friday, but his statement and subsequent questions focused on the release of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who had been detained in China for more than 1,000 days. The prime minister announced late that night the two men had boarded a plane which had just left Chinese airspace when he stepped before cameras.
The Liberals under Trudeau gained three seats from dissolution, amounting to 158 - just one more than they won in 2019. The Conservatives remained at the 119 seats they had at dissolution, though made some gains in Atlantic Canada, including Newfoundland and Labrador where they had not seen a victory since 2011. The NDP only improved their own seat count by one, with 25 seats. The Bloc Quebecois increased by one to 33. The Green Party remained at two seats, losing one on Vancouver Island but winning one in Ontario. The People's Party saw their popular vote total increase from 2019, but remained at zero seats.
It's not yet known how Trudeau will govern after his bid for a majority government came up short, though it could look almost the same as the past two years with the Liberals finding support from other parties to survive confidence votes.
