Trump calls Biden "puppet" of socialism, says defunding police movement a "fad"
CA, 11 Jul 2020
U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday ramped up his attacks on former vice-president and Democratic presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden, calling him and the Democratic party the "party of socialism" and criticized increased calls to defund police departments. He made the comments during a meeting with supporters of the people of Venezuela in Florida, and claimed that Biden wants to impose the "same system socialism" in the U.S., as seen in places like Venezuela and Cuba.
Trump said that Biden was a "puppet" of Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, two of the party's progressive wing, as well as of the people "who want to rip down statues and monuments." The president has criticized those pulling down statues and monuments of Confederate and historical leaders, but said on Friday they also want to bring down statues of Jesus Christ, adding that, "nobody will be safe in a Biden America."
During a separate event at SOUTHCOM in Doral on Friday with various military officials and members, Trump promised that his administration would never defund the police and called the movement a "fad."
