Trump says he could nominate Senator Ted Cruz for Supreme Court

CA, 20 Sep 2020
U.S. President Donald Trump said during a rally in Bemidji, Minnesota that he is possibly going to nominate U.S. Senator Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court, prior to learning about the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“You know, I have to have somebody that we're going to make sure we get approved, and the only one I could think of is Ted because he's going to get 50 Republican votes and he's going to get 50 Democrat votes,” Trump said on Friday.

If a successor is appointed, it would almost certainly push the court, which already had a 5-4 conservative majority, further to the right.

Trump has released a roster of names from which he would choose any potential candidates for the U.S. Supreme Court On Sept. 9.

In addition to Cruz, Trump's new list of supreme court candidates includes Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas; Noel Francisco, who served until recently as Trump's solicitor general; and Paul Clement, the solicitor general under former Republican President George W. Bush.
