Turkey earthquake survivors displaced onboard a 'hospital' ferry | Dispatch

Just a few weeks ago, the dark-blue Orhangazi ferry was shuttling passengers from Istanbul across the Marmara Sea and the Dardanelles.
Now the ship, docked at the Mediterranean port of Iskenderun, is laden with food and medicine, with the upper deck transformed into a makeshift hospital equipped with beds and examination rooms.
After Turkey’s devastating earthquake last week claimed at least 35,000 lives and plunged large swathes of the south-east into a humanitarian disaster, the city of Istanbul rushed to help the remote Hatay region which has received disproportionately little aid.
Iskenderun, once a busy port city a few hours’ ride away from the Syrian border, was brought to a standstill when the earthquake hit with most of its 300,000 residents becoming homeless overnight. Until earlier this week, the city’s electricity and water supply was completely cut off.
The sprawling port, the city’s lifeline, still bears the scars of the earthquake nine days after entire streets turned into dusty debris of concrete. A pile of containers collapsed during the tremors, setting off a fire that raged for almost five days.
Now that the port is relatively safe, the city of Istanbul has sent in a ferry with over 100 staff, most of them doctors and social workers, who are offering local residents a rare warm place to sleep, shower and receive a medical check-up.
