U.K. announces sanctions against human rights abusers including Saudi Arabia, Russia and Myanmar

CA, 06 Jul 2020
U.K. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab announced on Monday the first violators to have their assets frozen in the U.K. and to be banned from entering the country, following the introduction of the “sanctions regime” Raab tweeted about earlier Monday.

The list includes Saud Al-Qahtani, close aide to the Saudi crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman over the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Secretary Raab said “Those with blood on their hands won’t be free … to waltz into this country, to buy up property on the King’s Road, do their Christmas shopping in Knightsbridge, or siphon dirty money through British banks.”

The Sanctions will also target Russian officials involved in the death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and those involved in the human rights violations against the Rohyngia Muslim minority in Myanmar.
