U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee holds hearing on police use of force | FULL

CA, 17 Jun 2020
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on Tuesday to examine issues involving race and policing practices following the death of George Floyd in the United States, which sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and anti-Black racism.

The hearing occurred on the same day that President Donald Trump signed an executive order regarding police reform, including the creation of national standards for use of force in the country.

At the hearing, Sen. Lindsey Graham urged lawmakers to unite behind the common cause of police reform.

"When every Black man in America believes that getting stopped by the cops is a traumatic experience, something happened somehow, somewhere," he said. "Is it possible to find common ground? The answer is obviously yes, if we want to. As chairman, I would like to."

George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. on Memorial Day. Floyd died of asphyxiation as a result of a white police officer kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes while other officers pinned him to the ground.
