The head of Ukraine’s land forces has ordered more troops to be sent to defend Bakhmut, where Russian forces are carrying out relentless attacks.

The decision from Ukraine’s Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrsky came after he visited troops stationed on the front line last week.

"The enemy continues to advance in the direction of Bakhmut. He does not stop storming the city," the Ukrainian military said on Wednesday morning.

Capturing the small mining city would open the way for Russia to seize the last remaining urban centres in the industrial Donetsk province.

In his video address late on Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky said: "Russia in general takes no account of people and sends them in constant waves against our positions, the intensity of the fighting is only increasing."
