Vladimir Putin blamed Ukraine and the West for starting the war in his first major address to the nation ahead of the one-year anniversary of his invasion.

“It was them who unleashed the war,” he said. “We have been using force to stop it.”

The Russian president claimed Moscow launched the invasion as it was expecting the Kyiv government to attack eastern Ukraine and potentially Crimea that Russia annexed in 2014.
