Russian soldier Vadim Shishimarin, 21, has pleaded guilty to the murder of an unarmed 62-year-old civilian in the early days of the conflict in Ukraine.

The murder took place in north-eastern Ukraine and has become the first trial for war crimes since the conflict began in February.

Shishimarin admitted the 28 February killing in Kyiv district court on Wednesday. He could face life in prison.
